Topic: The Case for a Shift in Strategic HR: Healthy Workplaces as a Benefit

Abstract

Performance equals ability and what (Dunnette, 1973)? Studies have typically operationalized intrinsic motivation in terms of the behaviors of, and policies implemented by, supervisors—neglecting the physical environment. Similarly, HR practices rarely consider the physical environment. We focus on healthy workplaces, which involves the intersection of the behavioral and physical environments.

Press Paragraph

A healthy workplace is an underappreciated strategic benefit and an under-studied component of motivation. The physical and behavioral attributes of the work environment affect employee engagement and well-being, personnel-related costs, and the ability of firms to attract and retain high-quality talent. The combination of healthy workplace elements into a coherent, internally consistent, and integrated operating environment creates working conditions that enable employees to thrive. We describe the characteristics of a healthy workplace and argue for investing in key facility and behavioral changes—changes that can strengthen the brand as “the employer of choice.”
