Bio/CV: 

Gourab Kar is an architect, industrial designer and human factors researcher based in New Delhi, India. His interests lie in envisioning research-driven-design approaches to shape objects, spaces and experiences to be in tune with human needs, capabilities and behaviors. Gourab’s current research investigates approaches to reduce sedentary behaviors and increase physical activity in our everyday lives - at home, in school, and in our offices.

Gourab was a faculty member at the National Institute of Design (NID) in Ahmedabad, India, where his research involved identifying challenges for Universal Design in the Indian context, and its implications for design research, pedagogy and practice. Prior to joining NID, Gourab worked as an industrial designer at Antenna Design in New York City, and at Pentair Inc in New Delhi, India. Gourab has a Master of Industrial Design (MID) from Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta; a Master of Design (M.Des) from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi; and a professional Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) from Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi (India).

Gourab is currently an assistant professor at the Department of Design, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. Previously, he was a postdoctoral scholar at the Interdisciplinary Center for Healthy Workplaces at the University of California, Berkeley. He has a Ph.D. in Human Behavior & Design from Cornell University where his doctoral research investigated ergonomic effects of sit-stand workstation for computer-based work.

human factors and ergonomics, sedentary behaviour and health, universal/inclusive design, environmental design research, body-conscious design, social and cultural factors in design
