Caitlin DeClercq earned a Ph.D. in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley with a previous M.S. degree in Health Professions Education from the University of Rochester. Her doctoral research investigated the social, historical, and built environment contexts of bodily education in American institutions of higher education, an endeavor that integrated her previous experience as a college health educator with her interests in health, education, and architecture. She also served as a post-doctoral researcher for the Interdisciplinary Center for Healthy Workplaces at UC Berkeley and remains a Research Fellow for the Center. In her current role, as Assistant Director of Graduate Student Programs and Services at Columbia University's Center for Teaching and Learning, Caitlin brings an interdisciplinary perspective to her work with graduate students. Through consultations and programming, Caitlin emphasizes the role of architecture in supporting inclusive pedagogy and active learning techniques and encourages instructors to intentionally engage the physical classroom environment in service of student-centered learning objectives. Caitlin is a published author with articles in Journal of Academic Librarianship and Planning for Higher Education and chapters in edited collections published by Routledge and Bloomsbury.
Caitlin DeClercq is currently a Senior Assistant Director of Graduate Student Programs and Services at the CTL. She facilitates programming and services for graduate students, postdocs, and other instructors at Columbia, and supports participants in the Lead Teaching Fellows program, the Teaching Observation Fellows Program, and the Teaching Development Program. With a background in health education and architecture, Caitlin brings an interdisciplinary perspective to her work at the CTL. Through consultations and programming, Caitlin emphasizes the role of design in supporting inclusive pedagogy and active learning techniques and encourages instructors to intentionally engage the physical classroom environment in service of student-centered learning objectives.
